Senior Associate Director of Advising and Wellness Programs at the University of Chicago Law School

"I continue to be impressed with the work our students are doing, and appreciate getting to be a part of supporting them during their time here."

Jesse Landstrom is the Senior Associate Director of Advising and Wellness Programs at the Law School, where she provides holistic support to UChicago Law School students. With a background in advising and more than a decade at the University, she brings a student-first, welcoming approach to academic advising and student support. Outside of her time at the Law School, Jesse finds joy in traveling, yoga, and volunteering in Chicago (like supporting a Free Community Kayak day)!

Q: Can you describe the work you do at the University of Chicago?

I provide holistic support to students in our Law School community. Specifically, I provide academic advising, wellness programs, referrals to campus resources, and support for students with academic accommodations. I also serve as a sounding board for any concerns students have, both personal and academic. It is important to me to create a culture of care and break down barriers to accessing resources at the Law School and broader campus community.

Q: How long have you been with the University of Chicago, and what drew you here?

My first position at the University of Chicago was Academic Adviser in the College, starting in 2011. I was interested in working with undergraduate students again, after working with graduate students at The Chicago School for several years. After my first year in the College, I moved into the Senior Adviser for Data Analysis and Planning Role for about 2 years, and then served as Assistant Dean of Students in the College for 5 years. Next, I decided to pursue a role working a different division on campus, and headed over to the Law School.

Q: How has your role changed since you started?

Some of my specific job tasks have changed over the years, but the big picture has stayed consistent for me. I have enjoyed working at a place where you can really grow within your role, and make connections with colleagues all over campus.

Q: What are some highlights of working at UChicago and the Law School?

One specific highlight during my time in the College was working with a group of Advisers to create a year-long training program for new staff. This was the most robust training I have ever had a part in, and it also provided excellent professional development opportunities for everyone involved in facilitating that training.

The staff at the Law School really comes together to support each other in our work. For example, colleagues have generously given their time to collaborate on programs like meditation programs for the Law School community, virtual cooking classes when we were all remote during the pandemic, and a pumpkin decorating program for both students and staff.

Over the years, I have appreciated all of the wonderful colleagues I have worked with on my direct teams, and with partner offices across campus. Some highlights have included serving on campus-wide committees, and participating in the Executive Program for Emerging Leaders initiative.

Q: You have had a great impact on the Law School. How has the Law School impacted you?

Even though I literally just crossed the Midway from the College to come over to the Law School, there was a lot to learn! Navigating such a different culture on a campus I had worked on for 8 years was a challenge, and I appreciate all of my staff colleagues who helped me with this process.

The Law School’s lunch talk programs have been one area that stands out. Attending programs organized by our Law School Student Organizations was a great way for me to learn what is important to our students, and to keep up-to-date on the field. I continue to be impressed with the work our students are doing, and appreciate getting to be a part of supporting them during their time here.

Q: Can you share a bit about a project or initiative you are currently working on?

It’s not a tangible initiative, but one that is very important to me. I am proactive about working to create community and connections within the Law School. In some recent meetings, students have mentioned how much it means to them when we as staff show up to their programs and are an active member of the community. This makes it easier for them when they are struggling and looking for someone to talk to. Some of the most meaningful moments to me have been when a student I do not know comes in and says they were told by a friend that they should talk to me, and that I would be able to help them.

Q: Beyond your role at the University, how else do you like to spend your time?

Outside of work, I like to find balance in spending time with family and friends, and pursuing various hobbies and interests like yoga, the outdoors, volunteer work, live music, movies, reading, biking, travel, and exploring Chicago neighborhoods. Some recent travels have been to Morocco and Patagonia for yoga and adventure trips.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to share with our UChicago community, such as a fun fact about yourself or a personal project?

One of my personal goals has been a commitment to volunteering my time. I have found some great organizations to get involved with: Chicago Books to Women in Prison, The Friendship Center, and Urban Rivers. A highlight this past year was facilitating a Free Community Kayak Days program through Urban Rivers, launching out of Park 571. It was so cool to introduce people of all ages to the joy of kayaking and spending time on the river!
