The Smart Museum of Art will be closed for installation from Monday, July 14, through Monday, September 22. Please join us this fall for Theaster Gates: Unto Thee, and a special opening symposium on October 4-5, 2025.

The Smart presents Theaster Gates's first solo museum exhibition in his hometown of Chicago. The exhibition Theaster Gates: Unto Thee is rooted in several core collections of objects that have been part of Gates’s artistic practice which he acquired through the University of Chicago, where he is Professor of Visual Arts.
