UCHICAGO TRIVIA
Today's Question:
Which University of Chicago President said, "free inquiry is indispensable to the good life, that universities exist for the sake of such inquiry, [and] that without it they cease to be universities," and was twice featured on the cover of TIME Magazine?
a) William Rainey Harper
b) Edward H. Levi
c) Robert M. Hutchins
d) Hanna Holborn Gray
Answer:
C) Robert M. Hutchins
Robert M. Hutchins was elected by the presidential search committee in April 1929 at just 30 years old, making him the youngest University of Chicago president. Hutchins gave 64 public addresses in his first year at the University, establishing a public presence and identity seldom equaled by a university president before or since. Appearing regularly on the radio, in the pages of popular magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post and TIME Magazine in 1935 and again in 1949, Hutchins personally represented in the popular mind the ideals of higher education as well as the particular programs of the University of Chicago.
