Faculty and Other Academic Appointees Tuition Benefits

The University offers a variety of tuition benefits for dependent children of Faculty and Other Academic Appointees. The summaries below provide key features of each of the tuition benefit offerings. 

A thorough description of each tuition benefit plan is available in the Educational Assistance Plan found under Benefit Plan Documents (Educational Assistance) along with the corresponding application.

TUITION BENEFITS FOR THE DEPENDENT CHILDREN OF FACULTY 

Faculty Children’s Scholarship Plan

  • The University pays undergraduate tuition for dependent children of eligible employees at any accredited college or university in the United States OR any academically recognized foreign college or university that offers an undergraduate program leading to a bachelor’s degree.

  • The maximum benefit is 8 semesters or 12 quarters. Summer school courses will count as a full semester or quarter if you submit an application to Benefits for the summer course.

  • No benefit is available for certification programs in a specialized trade or for industrial schools, such as schools for aviation, cooking, auto repair, computer programming, etc.

  • The maximum benefit awarded to your child cannot exceed the undergraduate tuition in effect at the University of Chicago at the time the tuition is due and payable.

  • Applications must be submitted to the Benefits Office each semester or quarter, no later than the last day of the semester or quarter for which the benefit is being requested.

Tuition Coverage

University Laboratory Schools Benefit 

  • The University pays 50% of the tuition at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools for the dependent child of employees in eligible positions.

  • An enhanced tuition assistance benefit is available to provide additional tuition assistance above the existing 50% remission level.

  • A sibling discount is available for families who have more than one dependent child at Lab.

  • Application Deadline: Complete a Lab Tuition Remission Request in Workday by the June 15th immediately preceding the start of the Academic Year for which you are applying.  If your child is a late admission or if you become eligible for the benefit after June 15th, submit your Lab Tuition Remission Request in Workday within two (2) weeks of your child's admission or your eligibility for the benefit.

Diverse Learners Tuition Portability Benefit

  • The Diverse Learners Tuition Portability Benefit (“diverse learners benefit”) is a taxable tuition benefit available for eligible employees whose child(ren) attend(s) one of three eligible schools: City Elementary (https://www.cityelementary.org), Hyde Park Day School (http://hydeparkday.org), or Wolcott College Prep (https://www.wolcottcollegeprep.org).

  • To be eligible for this benefit, employees must meet two separate eligibility requirements. First, the employee must be eligible for the Faculty Children's Scholarship Plan (FCSP). For the complete list of University eligible positions please refer to “How Educational Assistance Works” in the Educational Assistance Plan here: https://provost.uchicago.edu/sites/default/files/EducationalAssistancePlan.pdf. The second eligibility requirement is that the employee’s primary residence must be located in one of the University’s nine mid-South Side neighborhoods, which are: Douglas, Grand Boulevard, Greater Grand Crossing, Hyde Park, Kenwood, Oakland, South Shore, Washington Park, and Woodlawn.

  • The taxed benefit is paid in two equal installments in September and in January.

  • To receive this benefit, you will need to apply each year by August 1 and submit any required supporting documentation.
