Getting to Know UChicago: Your First Day

Two people walking under Hull Gate

The recommended actions below are guidelines from Human Resources.  As department HR practices may vary, please consult with your supervisor, HR Partner or department administrator for additional guidance.

Note: Some of the resource pages listed below require you to log in to the UChicago Intranet. New hires generally gain full access to the UChicago Intranet within the first week after their start date, once the individual has activated their CNetID, their HR representative has entered their data into Workday, and the identity management system adds the individual to their correct Grouper groups. If you do not have intranet access after these steps have been completed, email us at uchicagointranet@uchicago.edu.

First Day Tasks

  • Claim your CNetID (official electronic ID used for accessing email and other University systems) if you have not done so already.

  • On or soon after your first day, log into Workday using your CNetID and password to complete the tasks of:

    • uploading your state tax election documentation

    • entering bank account information for direct deposit of pay

    • enrolling in benefits, if applicable

The onboarding process is not complete until there are no more action items in your Workday® inbox and your onboarding worklet has disappeared.

  • Review the University’s benefit plans and make a note of any questions you may have. You will receive access to an overview of the benefits offerings at the orientation session. If you have questions before or after attending the orientation session, call or email the Benefits Office at 773-702-9634 or benefits@uchicago.edu. Reminder: You must enroll for benefits within 31 days of your start date.

  • Register in Workday for the next available virtual Getting to Know UChicago New Hire Orientation session. The sessions are held virtually via Zoom every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Registered participants will receive the Zoom meeting details before their respective session.

  • Meet with your HR Partner or supervisor to receive your phone extension and information on how to activate your voicemail.

  • Request required building keys/card access for your work area through your HR Partner. Tour your building to identify restrooms, fire exits, conference rooms, supply room, and break areas.

  • Review this Box folder with various downloadable resources for new employees, including the latest Benefits Guidebook, University holiday calendar, payroll calendar, campus map, business travel resources, transportation and parking guides, list of University Resource Groups, and more.

  • Introduce yourself to your new coworkers and other staff members, perhaps check out a new lunch spot.

    • Visit the IT Services website to learn how to get connected to University systems.

    • If you have extra qualifiers in your email address (e.g. xxx@bsd.uchicago.edu or xxx@surgery.uchicago.edu), visit the IT Services staff page to have emails sent to your xxx@uchicago.edu email to your department-specific email address.

  • Explore our Campus Maps resources, view the UChicago Safety webpage, visit the Transportation and Parking site, and review disability and accessibility resources for information on getting around campus.

  • Clarify initial assignments with your manager.
