Getting to Know UChicago: Your First Week

The recommended actions below are guidelines from Human Resources.  As department HR practices may vary, please consult with your supervisor, HR Partner or department administrator for additional guidance.

Note: Some of the resource pages listed below require you to log in to the UChicago Intranet. New hires generally gain full access to the UChicago Intranet within the first week after their start date, once the individual has activated their CNetID, their HR representative has entered their data into Workday, and the identity management system adds the individual to their correct Grouper groups. If you do not have intranet access after these steps have been completed, email us at uchicagointranet@uchicago.edu.

 

First Week Tasks

  • Register for the next available virtual Getting to Know UChicago New Hire Orientation session in Workday. The sessions are held virtually via Zoom every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Registered participants will receive the Zoom meeting details before their respective session.

     
  • Obtain your UChicago ID Card from the ID & Privileges Office located in the Regenstein Library, Suite 100F. For more information, call (773) 702-3344 or visit the ID & Privileges Office website.

  • Sign-up for your benefits and direct deposit using Workday®; Please Note:  CNet ID is required to access the website. You must enroll in benefits within 31 days of your hire date.

  • Sign for cAlerts to be notified about campus emergencies. 

     
  • Visit the the Department of Safety and Security Transportation page to assist you in planning your commute and parking options.

     
  • Review Box folder from Human Resources with various downloadable resources for new employees, including the latest Benefits Guidebook, University holiday calendar, payroll calendar, campus map, business travel resources, transportation and parking guides, list of University Resource Groups and check out the intranet's dedicated Campus Resources page for more helpful information. 

  • Review the important policies and handbooks, such as the Employee Handbook, University Human Resources Policies, and University Standards for Business Conduct; learn and familiarize yourself with department procedures and practices.

     
  • Visit the Environmental Health and Safety website to determine if any additional safety training is necessary for your position.

     
    • Sign up for list hosts, group lists, distribution lists, internal/office phone lists through your Human Resources Partner or supervisor; subscribe to various University newsletters and podcasts to learn more about UChicago.

    • Explore the Newsletters and Podcasts pages on the UChicago Intranet.

     

    • Discuss your department’s mission and goals and how your position aligns with those objectives.

    • Discuss job expectations and how your performance is managed and reviewed with your supervisor.
