Biweekly Leadership Digest
Leadership Development & Strategy aims to support administrative leaders through professional development programs, specialized leadership training, and cross-University community-building. We offer a variety of development experiences and connection opportunities, such as workshops and intersectional learning spaces. In addition to the programs and offerings listed on this page, we provide consultation services to administrative and academic leaders regarding a range of leadership and organizational development matters. Leadership Development & Strategy is an initiative within the Office of the President.

Crucial Conversations: Two Part Series
A crucial conversation is a discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong. Throughout this interactive two-part series, you will learn powerful tools that help you learn how to handle even the most difficult conversations for better results
Effectively Managing Up
This virtual 1.5 workshop will share techniques on building trust and working with your manager to obtain the best results for you, your manager and your unit.
Giving Effective Feedback
This virtual, interactive 1.5 hour workshop will help managers develop the skill of giving feedback in a way that improves performance, drives engagement and builds trust. You will learn a simple but powerful model for feedback and have an opportunity to practice putting it into action.
How Managers Influence Employee Engagement
Learn research-backed strategies and exchange ideas with fellow managers about how to positively influence your team’s engagement with their work.
Leveraging Your Strengths
This 1.5 hour virtual workshop will guide you to identify your top 5 talents and understand more about what makes you unique.
Reflecting on Your Career Development
Through structured exercises and discussion, this session will provide attendees with an opportunity to reflect on their professional goals, their unique strengths, and resources to help them along their personal career path.

This guide is designed to help prepare new managers for their role, outlining key responsibilities and offering a selection of helpful tips and resources.
Nomination-Based Cohort Leadership Programs
The programs below bring together cohorts of leaders from across the University. Participants are nominated by senior leaders within their unit, division, or school. Each program runs once annually. Please contact us to learn more about the nomination process or other aspects of the programs.
Advanced Leadership Program (ALP)
This program is designed for senior administrative leaders to help them expand their leadership capabilities, foster greater collaboration with peers across the institution, and gain broader perspective on strategic issues facing the University of Chicago. Common titles of participants include Associate Deans, Associate and Assistant Vice Presidents, and Executive Directors. The program features a 360-degree assessment, interactive workshops, structured peer learning, and individual executive coaching.
Executive Program for Emerging Leaders (EPEL)
This program is designed for high-potential mid-career staff and run in partnership with Chicago Booth Executive Education. Common titles of participants include Associate Directors, Directors and Senior Directors. Led by Booth faculty members and invited instructors, the program provides frameworks for decision making, leadership, and managerial acumen. Participants also benefit from a focus on individual skill development and personal leadership lessons shared by senior leaders at the University.
Manager Fundamentals Series
This series is designed for managers with less than 2 years of managerial experience. Throughout the series, we'll explore a diverse range of management topics through a mix of self-paced modules along with five engaging facilitated live sessions. Content focuses on time management, delegation, performance management, navigating conflict and difficult conversations, and team dynamics.

- Academic Impressions
Academic Impressions provides free extensive online leadership and professional development specifically for faculty and higher education professionals. We have extended that license to be enterprise wide for all University of Chicago faculty and staff. To start accessing these resources, simply login or create an account on the Academic Impressions website using your UChicago email address (it will accept all variations).
- LinkedIn Learning
LinkedIn Learning provides free, flexible on-demand online training for the UChicago community on a wide range of topics. Search by skill, subject, or software. It also makes personalized course recommendations for you.
- AllOne Health WorkLife Online
AllOne Health WorkLife Online provides convenient confidential access to a vast and continually refreshed library of personal and professional development skill builders. Its 30- to 40-minute tutorials are available on demand. Registration through AllOne Health (formerly Perspectives) website is required so that you can return to your bookmarked page in the future.
Other Leadership Resources
Manager Discussion Groups
Managers are invited to join a peer group of colleagues from across the University to meet monthly for a facilitated 60-minute conversation about engaging, supporting and leading their teams. Participants will exchange ideas and best practices.
Biweekly Leadership Digest
Sign up to receive our biweekly newsletter which includes links to articles, videos and resources on topics such as communicating with remote teams; confronting bias and inequities in the workplace; supporting employees; and decision making in times of uncertainty.
Employee Engagement Resources
Employee engagement helps measure and manage employees’ perspectives on workplace culture. Through the University’s partnership with Gallup, units can conduct employee engagement surveys and conduct strengths assessments for employees.
