Benefits for Postdocs
The University of Chicago Postdoctoral Researcher Benefit Program (PRBP) is designed to provide eligible participants a comprehensive benefits package.

Open Enrollment will take place from November 3, 2025 through November 17, 2025
Period of Initial Eligibility
All newly appointed Postdoctoral Researchers and Visiting Scholars are eligible to enroll within 31 days of their appointment start date. You must actively enroll to
have medical, dental, and vision coverage through the Postdoctoral benefits plan. If you do not enroll within 31 days of your appointment start date, you will not be able to enroll until the next Open Enrollment period or until you experience a qualifying life event.
Waiving Coverage
If you have medical, dental, or vision coverage elsewhere, you can choose to waive coverage provided under the Postdoctoral benefit plans.
Important Information for Visiting Scholars holding a J1 Visa Status
If you are a Visiting Scholar holding a J1 Visa status and wish to waive coverage, you must furnish proof that your medical coverage meets J1 Visa requirements. Go to https://internationalaffairs.uchicago.edu/employees-and-scholars to learn about waiver requirements.
All Postdoctoral Researchers and Visiting Scholars (with an appointment duration of more than 30 days) and their dependents are automatically covered for medical evacuation and repatriation benefits necessary to satisfy the J Visa Program.
It is not necessary to purchase supplemental insurance to satisfy the J-1 and J-2 Visa requirements regarding Medical Evacuation or Repatriation. The Standard Insurance Company offers both J1 and J2 visa holders the required insurance coverage as shown below:

Medical Plans for Postdoctoral Researchers
The University offers Postdoctoral Researchers two (2) medical plan options from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois. One plan is a PPO and one is an HMO, allowing you to select the type of coverage that works best for your family.
Dental Plans for Postdoctoral Researchers
The University of Chicago offers Postdoctoral Researchers two dental plans from MetLife Dental.
Vision Plans for Postdoctoral Researchers
In 2026, Postdoctoral Researchers will be offered the same vision plans through VSP that is offered to faculty, other academics and staff. As in the past, you will have the option of two vision plans.
Life and Disability Insurance Plans for Postdoctoral Researchers
The University of Chicago provides basic life, accidental death and dismemberment, short-term disability and long -term insurance coverage from The Standard to Postdoctoral Researchers at no cost to them. Postdocs can also purchase supplemental life insurance for added protection.
Health and Wellness Programs
In addition to traditional benefits, Postdoctoral Researchers have access to additional Wellbeing programs. From gym memberships to financial wellness, these programs offer a wide variety of resources that focus on your whole health.
Retirement Plans
Plan for your financial future by contributing to the Retirement Plans offered to eligible Postdoctoral Researchers. The retirement plans are administered by TIAA and allow you to save money towards your retirement and meet with TIAA financial counselors to answer your retirement planning questions.
COBRA
COBRA offers Postdoctoral Researchers the option to continue their medical, dental and vision coverage for a period of time after their appointments with The University end.
