The University of Chicago offers four medical plans for full time benefits-eligible staff and academics.

If you are a postdoc looking for medical benefits information, please refer to this page.

The University of Chicago offers four different types of medical plans to choose from, two Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans and two Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans.  You can compare the four plans in the Benefits Guide to determine which plan best suits your medical needs.

The PPOs provide true insurance for the cost of medically necessary treatment for illness and injury, while maintaining your freedom to choose providers.

The HMOs reduce medical care costs by keeping you healthy and managing the costs that are incurred by monitoring your care and limiting your choice of providers.

Cost of Coverage

You and the University of Chicago share the monthly cost for medical coverage. The University pays the majority of the costs. Your cost is based on

  • The plan you choose;

  • The coverage level you choose (yourself only, yourself + spouse/partner, yourself + child(ren), yourself + family);

  • Your annual salary; and

  • Whether you are a full-time or part-time employee.

Your cost is automatically deducted from your paycheck before income taxes are withheld. The premium may be adjusted each year.
